John Tchicai (April 28, 1936 October 8, 2012) was a Danish free jazz saxophonist and composer. After moving to New York City in 1963, Tchicai joined Archie Shepp (born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 24, 1937; he is 83 at this writing) and his New York Contemporary Five, as well as the New York Art Quartet.

He played on John Coltranes Ascension, and Albert Aylers New York Eye and Ear Control, both influential free jazz recordings. New York Contemporary Five was Tchicais first album with Shepp also featuring the celebrated Don Cherry (1936-1995) added on trumpet. It was followed by the Tchicai-Shepp quartet LP Rufus, which was recorded during the same session and included a different version of Shepps Rufus.
